<image:title>Title Page - Controversial Author Blog - Introduction - The intellectual freedom of youth is an evergreen issue. And a complicated one. Protecting and educating our youth are universal priorities, no matter your views on how we should go about executing them. Most adults want the best for our kids. Sometimes, protecting and educating seem to be in conflict. Attempts to censor, usually out of a desire to protect, do happen. Sometimes, though, there is a perfect societal storm that births censorial movements. We are in such a time. This blog will seek to explore the work of John Green, an author whose YA novels have been repeatedly targeted for censorship but lauded far more. It will also seek to better understand what is happening in the United States in 2025, why it’s happening, what we can do about it, Green’s role on the stage, but most importantly, why we must fight to uphold the principles of intellectual freedom. Especially for our youth.</image:title>

<image:title>Title Page - Controversial Author Blog - Censorship and Teens in 2025 - Censoring one’s own intake of media because of content is a protected right, as is censoring the media consumption of one’s own child. The banning of books in schools through governmental authority, however, is an example of unconstitutional censorship, and a violation of the First Amendment. For the purposes of this blog, and in keeping with the norms of professional librarianship, per LaRue’s definition, the word censorship will refer to unconstitutional acts of blocking materials and resources, and challenges will refer to attempts, requests, and demands to governmental authority to censor. Self-censorship will refer to the internal censorship of a librarian or educator—or any governmental authority—that occurs because of personal disagreement with content or fear of retribution. For example, if a librarian disagrees with a book’s content or fears criminal prosecution due to including a book in a collection, they might choose not to select that book in the first place, no matter the evidence supporting it as an appropriate selection. This is an important kind of censorship that increases in frequency with censorship movements and is nearly impossible to measure. (Moore & Tudor, 2024)</image:title>

<image:title>Title Page - Controversial Author Blog - About John Green - John Green grew up in Orlando, Florida, the main setting for his third novel, Paper Towns. At 15, he began attending Indian Springs School in Alabama, the inspiration for Culver Creek in Looking for Alaska. Green describes the fictional boarding school as “almost inch for inch the same place that Indian Springs School was in 1995.” (vlogbrothers, 2010)</image:title>

<image:caption>A rationale is a document of information compiled to support the selection of a book for inclusion in a collection or curriculum. It should contain a plot summary, information on the value of the work, the potential content issues or objections with the work, examples of reviews, awards, alternate titles, and any other supplemental information that may be helpful in case of defending against a challenge. The process of compiling a rationale also helps deepen a librarian or educator’s understanding of the reasons why the work is a valuable addition to the collection or curriculum.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Summary “‘I go to seek a Great Perhaps.’ That’s why I’m going. So I don’t have to wait until I die to start seeking a Great Perhaps.” Before: Obsessed with the dying words of significant people, and inspired by the last words of the poet, Francois Rabelais, Miles Halter leaves home to attend Culver Creek, a boarding school near Birmingham, Alabama. He’s quickly renamed “Pudge” by his roommate, the “Colonel,” then meets and immediately falls for the titular Alaska, a charismatic, mischievous, and keenly intelligent, but troubled classmate. Pudge is adopted by the small but mighty band of not-the-rich-kids, comprised of the Colonel, Alaska, and another classmate, Takumi. He’s then pulled into an ongoing revenge prank war on night one when he’s duct taped and tossed in the lake by the rival rich kids. What ensues is a semester of bonding over zany antics, smoking and drinking, pondering the great questions—including the dying words of Simon Bolivar, “Damnit! How will I ever get out of this labyrinth?”—and a growing pull between Pudge and Alaska, despite the fact that she’s “in love with her boyfriend.” One drunken night, Pudge and Alaska finally make out, Alaska promises “to be continued,” before taking a late-night call, becoming upset, and driving away.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Summary: Quentin Jacobsen has been in love with his next door neighbor, Margo Roth Spiegelman, since they were kids. They were best friends back then. Now they’re seniors in high school, about to graduate, and Margo Roth Siegelman has been running with the popular crowd for the last few years, leaving Q behind with his band geek friends. But then Margo climbs through his window late one night and tells him she needs his help, specifically his car. They sneak out and spend the night executing revenge pranks and wild escapades that include breaking into Sea World and contemplating Orlando’s “paper town” nature on the rooftop of a downtown office building. The night ends with a kiss, and Q thinks his dreams of Margo Roth Spiegelman being his girlfriend may have finally come true. But the next day she disappears. Again. She’s done this before, but this time she stays away. Q finds clues that he believes she left for him, so he and his quirky band of friends—Radar, Ben, and Margo’s friend Lacey—embark on solving the mystery of where she went, often fearing the worst. On graduation day, Q solves the mystery at the eleventh hour and the crew set off on a 24-hr road trip to try to get to her in time. When they do find her, Q realizes that he has been misimagining her all these years. They share a day of closure together before going their separate ways, and Q reflects on how our views of people can be so off base and how the consequence can be extreme. The story is full of Green’s signature zany characters that leave you laughing out loud, and profound reflection that keeps you thinking beyond the end of the book.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Summary: Hazel Grace is living with, and dying from, thyroid cancer. She’s 16 years old, and a miracle for having survived this long. She’d rather stay home and watch America’s Next Top Model with her mom, but at her mom’s insistence, she reluctantly attends the Cancer Kids Support Group, pointless as it seems. Then one day, Augustus Waters shows up at a meeting, even though he’s in remission, to support his friend Isaac, who’s about to lose a second eye to his particular cancer. The connection between the two is instant. After Augustus reads Hazel’s favorite novel, An Imperial Affliction, a book by the reclusive (and fictional, created by Green) author Peter Van Houton, the two embark upon an adventure to meet the author and ask him what happens after the abrupt ending in which the main character dies. Using Augustus’s “Wish” granted by the “Genies” after losing his leg to osteosarcoma, they fly to Amsterdam, have a romantic dinner paid for by Van Houton, then go to his home the next day, only to find it was his assistant, Lidewij, who has been prodding the bitter author to engage with them and who facilitated most of their visit. They have a horrifying experiencing in which Van Houton is just about as awful to them as could be imagined, does not answer their questions, after which the distraught Lidewij quits her long-time employer and accompanies the teens to visit the Anne Frank house. At the House, Hazel and Augustus enjoy a liberating public kiss that prompts a celebratory round of applause from the other tourists and captures how utterly joy and tragedy can become entangled in a poignant salute to all the beauty and goodness that survives even when we do not.</image:caption>

<image:title>Title Page - Controversial Author Blog - Review: An Abundance of Katherines - Colin Singleton, child prodigy, has just been dumped for the nineteenth time by a girl named Katherine. And he’s not ok. So, accompanied by his best friend, Hassan, Colin embarks on a spontaneous road trip with no agenda other than to get over Katherine the nineteenth. And prove his mathematical formula for predicting the outcomes of romantic entanglements, thusly achieving his “Eureka!” moment, marking his place in history, and winning back Katherine the nineteenth. But t he pair of recent high school grads don’t get far on their spontaneous road trip before they end up in Gutshot, Tennessee, lured by the promise of viewing the grave of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand.</image:title>
<image:caption>In Gutshot, they meet Lindsey Wells, a tour guide for the small town. While she doesn’t immediately help Colin rebound, there’s something there. But Lindsey is dating another guy named Colin, strangely enough. Lindsey’s mother, Hollis, who runs the tampon string factory, hires Colin and Hassan for the summer to document the townspeople’s personal stories, and invites them to stay at her home. Hilarity ensues as Colin and Lindsey both work through better understanding the timeless question: what really matters? Colin does finally get his “Eureka!” moment, but it’s not quite as he expected. Possibly better. An Abundance of Katherines was a 2006 Printz Honor Book.</image:caption>

<image:title>Title Page - Controversial Author Blog - Conclusion - Running through John Green’s vast body of work, in books and online, are themes of openness. Openness to human stories. Openness to getting it wrong. Openness to trying again to get it right. He writes to keep hope and wonder alive and well, despite apparent futility. He never ceases to question and act on the uniquely human impulse to seek to understand, while bravely resisting the likewise human impulse to run away, avoid, censor.</image:title>
<image:caption>Green’s work is an invitation to stand in this vulnerability with him, to lean into the beautiful existential crisis that is humanity. He and his brother and all of Nerdfighteria call to us all to “Never Forget to Be Awesome.” What this community is saying is that they value ideas, thought, perspective, story. All of those things contained within libraries and which we must work harder than ever to preserve. (Photo: Unsplash)</image:caption>
